Management Team

Pat Rivelli — President, CEO and Founder
Mr. Rivelli has served as President and CEO of BTI since the company’s inception in 2004. He has over 15 years of experience developing and commercializing medical devices for treatment of vascular disease.

He served as Co-Founder, President and CEO of Smart Therapeutics, which developed and commercialized the first intracranial stent. Smart was acquired by Boston Scientific in late 2002. He previously held several senior-level positions at Target Therapeutics and consulting positions at leading companies such as Guidant, Pfizer Corporation, and Baxter Healthcare. He serves as board member and angel investor for private medical device companies.

Mr. Rivelli has a B.A. from Harvard University and an M.S. in Management from the MIT Sloan School. He is the author of numerous patents.

Alec Piplani — COO and Vice-President of R&D
Mr. Piplani has served as COO and Vice-President of R&D since 2006. He has over 18 years of experience developing medical products in a start-up environment.

He previously served as COO of Chestnut Medical, Vice President of R&D and COO for Smart Therapeutics, Vice President of R&D for Cardiovention, and Director of Product Development for Endovascular Technologies. Mr. Piplani is a Co-Founder of both KFX Medical Corporation and Chestnut Medical Technologies. He has made several successful "angel investor" placements including Ovion Inc. (acquired by American Medical Systems, Inc.), Vascular FX LLC (acquired by Micrus Endovascular Corporation), and CryoVascular Systems (acquired by Boston Scientific Corporation).

Mr. Piplani holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. in Physics from Rutgers University. He is the author of over 40 patents.

Maurice Buchbinder, M.D. — Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Buchbinder has served as Chief Medical Officer of BTI since 2006. He is a pioneer in the field of interventional cardiology and has participated extensively in the development and clinical evaluation of new cardiovascular technologies for over twenty years.

In his clinical practice, Dr. Buchbinder served as Director of the Interventional Cardiology Department at Sharp Memorial Hospital and Co-Director Interventional Cardiology at Scripps Memorial Hospital. While in full-time clinical practice, Dr Buchbinder also founded several successful medical ventures in interventional cardiology. Some of these ventures were acquired by major medical device manufacturers including Medtronic, Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson.

Dr. Buchbinder received his medical degree from the McGill University where he also completed his internship in Internal Medicine. Dr. Buchbinder completed his residency specializing in Internal Medicine at Stanford University Hospital. Dr. Buchbinder has been practicing medicine since 1983 and is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease specializing in interventional cardiology.
